Layout
How the numbers were checked
- Fence Board Calculator
- 72 pickets (80 with 10% waste), 6 posts, 10 rail sections from 5 lengths of 4.8 m (6 with waste).
- Even spacing
- 72 pickets at 50 mm gaps overrun by 30 mm, so spread the gaps to 49.6 mm.
Build steps
Set out the line
Run a string line along the 10 m fence and mark 6 post positions 2 m apart, centre to centre.
Set the posts
Dig and set the posts plumb to the depth and footing your local guidance calls for. Keep the tops in line with the string before the footings cure.
Fit the rails
Cut 10 rail sections so each joint lands on a post centre, two per 4.8 m length. Fix two screws at each rail end.
Space the pickets
Cut a spacer block 49.6 mm wide so 72 pickets fill the run evenly, and fix each picket with two screws per rail.
Assumptions
- Unit prices are assumed 2026 retail figures in US dollars for illustration only, not supplier quotes. Replace them with local prices before budgeting.
- Pickets are bought pre-cut at the finished height; cutting pickets from longer stock is not included.
- Post length assumes 600 mm below ground. Footing depth and concrete are not estimated because they depend on soil, wind exposure and local guidance.
Safety and scope
- Locate underground services before digging post holes.
- This is not engineering advice. Fence height, footings and boundary rules vary by location, so check local regulations before building.
- Treated timber dust is an irritant. Wear a dust mask and gloves when cutting.
- Planning estimates only — verify before you buy or build. Read the disclaimer.
Quantity basis for each material
- Treated pine picket, 1200 × 90 × 19 mm
- Fence Board Calculator picket count including 10% waste.
- Treated post, 90 × 90 mm × 1.8 m
- 5 bays need 6 posts.
- Treated rail, 90 × 45 mm × 4.8 m
- 10 rail sections, two per 4.8 m length, plus 10% waste.
- Galvanised picket screws, box of 500
- 288 screws: 72 pickets × 2 rails × 2, plus 5% spare = 303.
- Galvanised rail screws, box of 100
- 40 screws: 10 rail sections × 2 ends × 2.
