How Woodshop Math Is Researched and Reviewed
The standards behind every calculator and guide on this site: where the numbers come from, what is deliberately out of scope, how content is dated, and how corrections are handled.
Woodshop Math publishes arithmetic. A wrong board-foot total costs money; a wrong stair or rafter figure can cost more than that. This page records the standards the Woodshop Math Editorial Team works to, so that a reader can judge the content rather than take it on trust.
The site is operated by AUSV SYSTEMS PTY LTD. It is free to use, funded by advertising, and has no accounts, paywalls or subscriptions.
Every number traces back to a named source
Reference data used by the calculators — softwood dressed sizes, species specific gravity, shrinkage coefficients — is taken from published standards and government research, not from aggregated web results. Each dataset records its issuing body, edition, the exact table it came from, and the date the team last verified it.
Where a value is derived rather than quoted, the derivation and its assumptions are written out on the page instead of being hidden inside the code.
Scope limits are stated, not implied
A calculator that models a simple symmetrical roof says so. A deck estimate that excludes framing says so. A nominal-size lookup that only covers North American softwood says so.
The team would rather publish a narrow tool with an honest boundary than a broad tool that quietly guesses outside its evidence.
No experience the team does not have
This site does not claim workshop testing, field trials, structural engineering review or code-compliance authority. It claims one thing: careful, sourced arithmetic.
Results are planning estimates. Structural adequacy, safety requirements and local building rules are explicitly out of scope and are flagged on every calculator and guide.
Guides are dated and revised in public
Each guide shows when it was first published and when it was last revised. Reference datasets carry their own verification date, which can differ from the guide's revision date.
When a source is superseded — a standard revision, a new handbook edition — the affected guides and calculators are updated and the revision date moves.
Corrections are welcome and acted on
Readers who find an error in a formula, a worked example or a cited value can write to contact@woodshopmath.com. Reports that identify a specific page and value are prioritised.
Substantive corrections change the guide's revision date. The team does not silently edit a worked example without moving that date.
Advertising never influences content
The site is funded by advertising served through Google AdSense. Advertisers have no input into which calculators are built, what the guides say, or which sources are cited.
The site currently uses no affiliate links and no sponsored placements. Calculator inputs and results are processed in the browser and are not sent to advertising or analytics systems.

If a formula, worked example or cited value on this site is wrong, tell us. Include the page address and the specific value you believe is incorrect, and we will check it against the source.
