Layout
How the numbers were checked
- Project Planner, shelving
- Four 2400 × 600 mm shelves, rotation allowed: 2 per 2440 × 1220 sheet, 2 sheets.
- Framing allocation
- Cut List Optimizer with a 3 mm kerf: 16 lengths of 2.4 m.
- Shelf levels
- Frame tops at 450, 1000, 1550, 2100 mm above the floor.
Build steps
Find the studs
Locate and mark every stud along the wall. The plan assumes studs at 450 mm centres, giving 6 fixings per ledger; adjust if your wall differs.
Cut the framing
Cut the 90 × 45 mm framing as shown in the allocation: ledgers and front rails at full 2400 mm length, 3 posts at 2100 mm and 20 cross members at 510 mm.
Fix the ledgers
Mark the shelf levels at 450, 1000, 1550, 2100 mm, check them with a level and fix each ledger to every stud with two screws suited to the wall construction.
Build the front frame
Fix the front rails to the posts at matching levels, then stand the front frame up and join it to the ledgers with the cross members at about 600 mm centres.
Deck the shelves
Rip each OSB sheet into two 600 mm strips and crosscut them to 2400 mm. Screw the decks to the ledgers, rails and cross members.
Assumptions
- Unit prices are assumed 2026 retail figures in US dollars for illustration only, not supplier quotes. Replace them with local prices before budgeting.
- Framing is 90 × 45 mm structural timber; OSB is 18 mm. Measure your stock before cutting.
- Wall studs are assumed at 450 mm centres for the fixing count.
Safety and scope
- This is not engineering advice. Shelf load capacity has not been calculated; it depends on timber grade, spans, fixings and the wall itself. Check local span tables or ask a qualified person before storing heavy items.
- Fix ledgers into studs or solid framing only, never into plasterboard alone, and use fixings rated for the wall material.
- Keep the heaviest items on the lowest shelf and check fixings periodically.
- Planning estimates only — verify before you buy or build. Read the disclaimer.
Quantity basis for each material
- 90 × 45 mm framing timber, 2.4 m
- Length count from the cut list optimizer allocation below.
- 18 mm OSB, 2440 × 1220 mm
- Project Planner sheet count: two shelf decks per sheet.
- 75 mm framing screws, box of 200
- 104 screws: 80 for cross-member ends (2 each) and 24 for rail-to-post joints.
- Structural screws for ledger-to-stud fixing, box of 50
- 48 screws: 4 ledgers × 6 studs at 450 mm centres × 2, plus 5% spare = 51. Choose a type rated for your wall.
- 40 mm screws for the OSB decks, box of 200
- 112 screws at 300 mm along the ledger and front rail plus 2 per cross member.
